Playwriting

The NEOMFA Playwriting program focuses on transitioning playwrights to a professional life in theatre. Students are free to engage any style of writing from traditional realism to experimental writing and performance art through small-group workshops, regular public readings and opportunities to study with noteworthy visiting artists – Naomi Wallace, Jeffrey Jones, Mickey Birnbaum and Jenny Magnus have recently visited.

In addition to open workshops, we offer courses in adaptation, experimental playwriting and special topics. Our small size, generally between 6 – 8 playwrights, allows us to tailor classes to student interests, provide close feedback, encourage one another to experiment with our approaches, and collaborate with local theatre professionals. Northeast Ohio is home to a thriving theatre scene that includes a major regional theatre, touring houses, and a host of mid-sized venues of all stripes that provide the opportunity to develop professional contacts through internships and other means.

The heart of the playwriting program is the annual NEOMFA Playwrights Festival, held each February at Convergence-Continuum in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood. The festival features fully-produced productions of graduating student thesis plays that allow playwrights to work for five weeks with professional actors, directors and designers to complete their program experience.
